WOMEN’S COUNCIL MENTORING PROGRAM WAVE III

CALL TO ACTION!

If you have ever heard the expression, "a truly good mentoring experience is as effective in business as an MBA"…and you have not yet signed up to participate as a Mentor or Mentee in the 2007 Women’s Council Mentoring Program, you have just found your New Year’s resolution!

If you are a current member of SFM who is ready to explore all the significant benefits of being mentored, we encourage you to complete your application for this important career-building program before the January 2007 launch. Or, if you work with or know someone who may not currently be an SFM member, but who could benefit from a valuable and value-added mentoring experience, please share this edition of FastFacts with them and encourage them to apply.

The SFM Women’s Council is currently accepting applications for its 2007 mentoring program. The Women’s Council Mentoring Program is designed to assist women members of SFM with their professional development through enhanced leadership skills, career issues and network building. Those accepted into this meaningful program are supported through articles and books chosen by the Women’s Council team to support the learning experience and develop what is hoped to be a valuable professional relationship.

How to Get Involved
Read the Mentoring Program Handbook to determine if being a Mentor or Mentee is right for you. The handbook outlines qualities for ideal Mentors and Mentees, program requirements, tips for a successful relationship and much more. Once you have reviewed the handbook and determined if you would like to participate, please complete the appropriate Expression of Interest Form and return it to SFM by Friday, December 1.

Men and women can serve as mentors
Mentee assignments are for women only

The SFM Mentoring Program Committee will review all applications and respond to you concerning your match by January 15.

Only you can make your career happen in the significant way that you want. And with the New Year around the corner, now is the time to act. Become a Mentor or Mentee in this year’s WC Mentoring Program. This could be the investment in yourself that lasts a lifetime. For more information about the WC Mentoring Program and to request a copy of the Mentoring Program Handbook and Interest Forms, please contact Maria Richie at 502/583-3783 or mrichie@hqtrs.com

2006 NATIONAL CONFERENCE REVIEW

Last month, over 400 SFM members and onsite industry professionals attended SFM’s 27th National Conference at the JW Marriott Resort and Spa in Las Vegas, Nevada. The conference experience began on Tuesday, October 24, with a golf tournament at the Tournament Players Club at The Canyons. The always popular and highly rated Section Forum where liaison and self-operator members could meet and take part in a facilitated dialogue with their colleagues to discuss similar challenges and share solutions was held Tuesday afternoon.

The New Member/First-Time Attendee Reception allowing those new to SFM to meet with SFM Board of Directors was a standing-room-only event! SFM Ambassadors accompanied the New Members and First-Timers to the Opening Reception in the Valencia Ballroom.

SFM President Russ Benson treated attendees to spirited renditions of classic songs, while enthusiastic bidders surveyed the numerous offerings of the Silent Auction. SFM member Mary Hofer, Foodservice Leadership Group, and her team of dedicated auction volunteers raised over $35,000. Due to the success of the evening, SFM was able to donate $8,500 of the auction funds to America’s Second Harvest with the remainder used to fund classes in onsite foodservice. The Opening Reception also featured amazing cirque performances and food and drinks for all.

Wednesday morning was set in motion with the third annual Hunger Awareness Walk and the Women’s Council Breakfast with special guest Nancy Sprecher from the Women’s Foodservice Forum to celebrate and discuss the recently formed alliance with the organization.

SFM President Russ Benson and Conference Chair Carol Bracken-Tilley officially welcomed everyone to Las Vegas and kicked off the conference themed, "Innovation: A Gamble Worth Taking."

Doug Hall, author, founder and CEO of Eureka! Ranch was the opening keynote speaker. Later, attendees visited with 46 sponsor companies in the InnovationsFair and a set of concurrent sessions. Topics ranged from harnessing ones creativity, corporate initiatives to promote healthy choices and innovative cooking technologies. The General Session that followed was titled, "Innovations in Catering" and provided information about different aspects of catering including menu development, marketing and food presentations.

Thursday morning began with three more concurrent educational sessions on communication, diversity and ways to achieve sustainability by developing and implementing environmentally friendly efforts. After the morning’s education sessions and the General Session and Business Meeting, attendees were treated to a sold-out in-depth session on wine and cheese pairings with Master Sommelier, Tim Gaiser.

The Taste of SFM event was a success with participants from ARAMARK, Compass, Corning, Lackmann Culinary, Sodexho, Valley Services and JW Marriott serving scrumptious entrees and desserts for all! Attendees were also treated to a special Parade of Chefs to recognize and thank our chefs for their achievements.

Directors’ Award recipients were announced previously and presented during the President’s Luncheon, but two additional awards were presented during the Taste of SFM. SFM’s Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Dick Cattani in recognition of his contributions and achievements in the foodservice industry. Gary Gunderson, SFM President in 1991-92, received the President’s Award from Russ Benson for his support and guidance. Congratulations Dick and Gary!

Russ Benson also passed the gavel to incoming SFM President Sally Minier, who will lead SFM through October of 2007. In her acceptance remarks, Sally shared her initiatives for the coming year.

Thanks to Conference Chair Carol Bracken-Tilley, Co-Chair Jay Silverstein and the entire Conference Planning Committee for organizing a very successful conference full of high-powered speakers and new and exciting networking events. Make plans now to attend SFM’s 2007 conference in Montreal, Quebec, October 23-25!

COLLABORATIVE COMPETITION™ and FORMING PACING PARTNERS™
SFM Women's Council Professional Development Workshop
The SFM Women’s Council held their professional development seminar, "Enhancing Your Career in a Competitive World" on November 13, 2006 at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York during the International Hotel/Motel and Restaurant Show. Sixteen SFM professionals gathered to learn about a woman’s mindset around competition and career development and enjoyment. The Women’s Council would like to extend their appreciation to Kathryn Mayer of KC Mayer Consulting for sharing her expertise and insights. Thanks also go to Candace Johnson of IH/MR&S who served as site coordinator helping make this event a success.
